Since its humble origins in the early 1980s, the Home Run Derby has become a fan favorite, and is one of the most-watched events broadcast on ESPN. These aren’t the only players to go without a home run in the Home Run Derby. Gary Gaetti , Chris Sabo , Howard Johnson , Greg Vaughn , Gary Sheffield , Troy Glaus , Bret Boone and Brandon Inge all finished with zero home runs during their time in the event. The following year, Piazza led the Mets to an NL pennant and a World Series appearance in the 2000 Subway Series. Of note, all five games were decided by two runs or fewer, something that had not occurred in a World Series in almost 70 years.

MLB brought him back two years later to compete in the 1999 Derby at Fenway, where he promptly hit two. The sluggers in '97 must really have felt the pressure of the Century 21 contestants; six of the 10 competitors hit two or fewer home runs. He must have forgotten to bring his "vitamins" to the Astrodome, though, where he hit only one over the fence. Even the Bad News Bears hit more round-trippers in their exhibition game against the Houston Toros at the dome. Canseco happily would have taken that performance four years later, though, where he came out with zero.

It measured roughly 90 kilometers north–south, and 80 north-west. On Sept. 21, 2001, 10 days after the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, Piazza came to the plate at Shea Stadium in the eighth inning with the Mets trailing the rival Braves, 2-1. It was the first sporting event in the city since the attack, and Piazza delivered some much-needed jubilation for the more than 41,000 fans in attendance, taking pitcher Steve Karsay deep to left-center for the go-ahead two-run homer. April 10, 1999 New York Mets placed C Mike Piazza on the 15-day disabled list.

Fans expected big things from the slugger at that year’s Home Run Derby. However, even in the thin air at Coors Field, Big Mac could only produce a measly 4 home runs. Better than nothing, but not quite what fans were hoping for. Each year before the MLB All-Star Game, the league’s best sluggers come together for an annual home run hitting contest.

This is a list of the most disappointing performances in Derby history, highlighted by sluggers who came into the contest with the highest expectations only to leave with embarrassment. Over the years these winners have combined for hundreds of home runs, but not every participant finds success in the Home Run Derby. Since the debut of the Home Run Derby back in 1985, a total of 19 players failed to hit a single home run during their time in the event and one failed to hit one twice. Here’s a list of some of the worst performances from the Home Run Derby. Mets teammate Tom Glavine called Piazza a "first-ballot Hall of Famer, certainly the best hitting catcher of our era and arguably the best hitting catcher of all time".

He became known as the Monster after coach John Stearns was caught on tape during the 2000 National League Championship Series after a Piazza hit saying "The Monster is out of the Cage". Hesse has a dense highway network with a total of 24 motorways. The internationally important motorway routes through Hesse are the A3, A5, and A7. The A5 becomes as wide as four lanes in each direction near the city of Frankfurt am Main, and during the rush-hour, it is possible to use the emergency lanes on the A3 and A5 motorway in the Rhine-Main Region, adding additional lanes. Other major leading Hesse highways are the A4, the A44, the A45, the Federal Highway A66 and the A67.

A young player like that in the Home Run Derby against some veteran heavy-hitters made for an exciting event. Fred McGriff entered the 1992 All-Star break tied with Gary Sheffield with 18 HRs to lead the NL, but the two failed to get past the first round of the competition. McGriff failed most spectacularly, as the hometown slugger only gave away three souvenirs into the hometown stands at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. At least he managed to beat out one contestant, a home run hitter by the name of Barry Bonds. Sometimes, though, things don’t always go according to plan.

Mike Piazza was slugging .539 with 18 HRs going into the 1993 contest at Camden Yards and walked out with exactly zero. But he was determined to show it was a fluke by competing again in 1994. Piazza became the only player in MLB history to flub multiple derbies so miserably and was so embarrassed by the performances that he never competed again. In fact, Piazza declined repeated requests by MLB to take part in the 2005 contest as Italy's representative to promote the World Baseball Classic . Howard Johnson is one of the greatest Mets of all time, ranking third on the franchise lists for home runs, RBIs, doubles and stolen bases.

With the Mets ahead 4–2 in the 8th, and two runners aboard, Piazza hit one to the wall in center, nearly bashing his third homer of the day and putting the Padres ahead. Although recognized as a great hitter, Piazza has had some notable defensive accomplishments. Among them, Piazza caught two no-hitters thrown by Ramón Martínez and Hideo Nomo while playing with the Dodgers.
